Received a car? Put it in your name quickly — you cannot legally register or insure it until the title is transferred.

Documents you usually need

  • The original title, signed over to you by the donor or charity
  • A bill of sale or donation/award letter
  • An odometer disclosure (for most vehicles under 20 years old)
  • Proof of insurance in your name
  • Your driver's license or ID
  • Emissions or safety inspection, if your state requires it

Step by step

  1. Check that the title is signed in the right places and has no open liens
  2. Buy insurance before you drive the car
  3. Visit your state motor vehicle agency (or county office) within the deadline — often 10 to 30 days
  4. Pay the title, registration and any tax or fees
  5. Receive your plates and registration

Taxes on donated or gifted cars

Some states exempt gifted vehicles or vehicles received from a charity from sales tax; others charge a use tax. Ask your state agency and keep your award letter. See the real cost of a donated car.
