Real grants and incentives

  • California clean-car incentives — Clean Cars 4 All and DCAP help income-qualified Californians buy cleaner vehicles
  • VA automobile allowance — for veterans with qualifying service-connected disabilities (details)
  • TANF and workforce help — some states pay for vehicles or transportation for people in work programs (details)
  • Vocational rehabilitation — vehicle modifications for people with disabilities who need a car to work

Nonprofit car loans

Programs like Ways to Work and many members of the Working Cars network offer small, low-interest loans for reliable used cars. They are faster than a free car and on-time payments build your credit.

There is no "federal car grant" you can apply for online. Websites promising one in exchange for a fee are scams. See the government car voucher scam.
