Getting your first license

  • Check your state motor vehicle agency for required documents (proof of identity, residency and Social Security number)
  • Ask workforce (WIOA) and TANF programs whether they pay for driver's education or license fees
  • Some nonprofits, high schools and foster care programs offer free or low-cost driving lessons
  • Practice with free online permit tests

Reinstating a suspended license

  • Find out exactly why it was suspended and what you owe
  • Ask about payment plans for fines and fees
  • Check whether your state has a license restoration, amnesty or "driver's license recovery" program
  • Contact a legal aid office — many help with license reinstatement for free

Each state guide lists the agency that handles licenses, titles and registration.
