Where to get a free car seat

  • WIC offices and local health departments — many run car seat distribution programs
  • Medicaid health plans — some managed care plans give free car seats to members who are pregnant or have young children
  • Hospitals — ask your maternity unit or pediatrician's office
  • Safe Kids coalitions — local chapters hold car seat events
  • 211 — ask for car seat programs near you

Get it installed correctly

Most car seats are installed incorrectly. A certified Child Passenger Safety (CPS) Technician can check yours for free — ask your health department, hospital or Safe Kids coalition, or look for inspection events.

Is a used car seat safe?

  • Only if you know its full history and it has never been in a crash
  • Check the expiration date on the label (usually 6–10 years)
  • Check for recalls on the NHTSA website
  • Make sure all parts and the manual are included
