Who we help

Free Cars for People With Disabilities

If you have a disability, the most reliable help often comes from programs that pay for vehicle modifications or transportation to work, rather than from free-car charities.

1-800-Charity Cars (Free Charity Cars)

All 50 states

Working poor families, domestic violence survivors, veterans and military families, people with medical needs, disaster victims and transitional shelter residents.

Vocational rehabilitation

Every state has a vocational rehabilitation (VR) agency that helps people with disabilities get and keep jobs. If transportation is a barrier to work, VR may help pay for vehicle modifications, driver training or transportation. Ask your VR counselor to add it to your employment plan.

Tips to improve your chances

  • Contact your state vocational rehabilitation agency if you need a car or modifications to work — they can fund equipment for eligible clients
  • Veterans with service-connected disabilities should check the VA automobile allowance and adaptive equipment grants
  • Ask your local Center for Independent Living about vehicle and transit programs
  • Look at paratransit and Medicaid non-emergency medical transportation for appointments

What to do while you wait

Free cars are rare and waitlists are long. Most families combine an application with a backup plan: repair help for a car they already have, grants and low-interest car loans, or government transportation help. Read what a donated car really costs before you are selected.
