Church Car Programs and Car Ministries

Many churches run car ministries that repair donated vehicles and give them to families — often with shorter waits than national programs.

How car ministries work

Church members and local mechanics repair donated cars, then give or sell them at low cost to people referred by pastors, social workers or partner agencies. Some ministries also offer free oil changes and repair days.

How to find one

  • Call large churches in your area and ask whether they have a car ministry
  • Ask your caseworker, shelter or food pantry — they often know local ministries
  • Dial 211 and ask for vehicle or repair assistance
  • Check local Catholic Charities, Lutheran Services and St. Vincent de Paul offices

What to expect

  • A referral from a pastor or social worker is often required
  • You may need to show a job or job offer
  • You will usually pay title, registration and insurance
