State low-cost insurance programs

A few states run their own programs. California's Low Cost Automobile Insurance Program (CLCA) offers liability coverage to income-eligible drivers with good driving records. New Jersey offers a Special Automobile Insurance Policy (SAIP) for drivers on Medicaid. Check your state's insurance department for current options.

Ways to lower your premium

  • Compare quotes from at least three insurers every year
  • Choose state minimum liability for an older, low-value car
  • Raise your deductible if you can cover it in an emergency
  • Ask about discounts: good driver, low mileage, paperless, paid in full, safety course
  • Try usage-based (telematics) insurance if you drive carefully and not often
  • Bundle with renters insurance if it lowers the total

Get quotes before you receive a car

Programs usually require insurance before you can drive away. Getting quotes early helps you plan. See the real cost of a donated car.
