Frequently asked questions

Do you give away cars?
Yes. Free Car Foundation awards donated vehicles to people in need. You can apply online for free. Awards depend on the cars donated in your area, so we cannot guarantee a car or a timeline.
How do I apply for a free car online?
Complete our free car application. It takes about 5 minutes. We never ask for your Social Security number, bank or card details, and we never charge a fee.
Who qualifies for a free car?
Most programs require low household income (often at or below 200% of the federal poverty level), no reliable vehicle, a valid driver's license and a clear need such as work or medical care.
How long does it take?
From weeks to years. It depends on donations in your area. Local referral programs are often faster.
Is a free car really free?
You usually pay title, registration, taxes and insurance. See the real cost of a donated car.
Can I choose the car?
Usually not. Some programs let you list needs like an automatic transmission or wheelchair access, but not the make or model.
Does the government give free cars?
No. Some government programs help with transportation costs. See government car help.
Is there a free car giveaway in 2026?
Brands run legitimate sweepstakes from time to time, but you must enter them yourself and never pay to claim a prize. See the "you won a car" scam.
What if I am turned down?
Reapply when allowed, apply to other programs and look at repair help and nonprofit car loans.
Can I get a free car with bad credit?
Yes. Free car programs do not usually check credit. Nonprofit car loans may also accept poor credit.
How do I avoid scams?
Never pay to apply and never share your SSN or bank details through messages. See our scam alerts.
