Where the myth comes from
The 2009 "Cash for Clunkers" program (CARS) gave trade-in rebates toward new cars, and some states today offer clean-vehicle incentives. Scammers use these real programs to make fake "free car voucher" offers sound believable.
How the scam works
- Ads promise a "government car voucher" or "free car from the government"
- You are asked to pay an application, processing or "release" fee
- Some sites collect your Social Security number and bank details
- No voucher or car ever arrives
What is real
- Clean Cars 4 All and DCAP in California — incentives, not free cars
- TANF, WIOA and VA transportation help — see government car help
- Charity programs — see our program list
Government agencies do not charge fees to apply for benefits and do not contact you by social media about prizes.
